Bardot- a.k.a. Bonnie

One of my all time favorite scenes in a movie is from the film "And God Created Woman" where Brigitte Bardot is dancing feverishly on a table top. Considered to be one of the most erotic films, especially in 1956, where she sunbathes nude, rides bicycles with dresses, and seduces every man in her way. I love when one of the older men on the boat turns to a woman his own age and says...(about Bardot) She has the courage to do whatever she wants, whenever she pleases..."
Her beauty is so unique. Even with her raven dark hair in "Spirits of the Dead" she is striking as she rides on horses and eventually is tied to a stake and whipped.
Today I spotted these strange and amazing videos of the screen siren with Mr. Sensuality Serge Gainsbourg. I also found this shocking little nudie pic of his wife Jane Birken lounging around with Bardot.Brigittebardot12

Delicious DOILY!

Looks like Jean-Paul Gaultier has tapped into my favorite thing jar this season. First he created wild beaded headgear with feathers, then added some spider web like doily details. Sure it's weird, but haven't you had days where a doily across your face like a robber mask could trick out your wardrobe

Brace Yourself for the Sadists

00070m_7

Just viewed the runway show of Viktor and Rolf, and have to say Bravo for the stage follies. I can only imagine how nerve-wracking it must have been sitting in the audience while delicate models weighed down with scaffolding poles and lights teetered in oversized wooden clogs and walked an entire runway. The anticipation of a neck breaking most likely overrides all other senses. Finally a show that not only adds some fear, but requires models to show real talent in the walking department. I'm sure Miss. Tyra Banks will somehow incorporate this into her ANTM show, maybe have the runway littered with razor blades and snakes. And all this time Judy Blume's Deanie thought that neck brace she had to wear was so bad...

Fancy 'Prescilla'

Remember my blog post about the lovely BAT FOR LASHES? Well, she has just completed the video for her new song Prescilla. Not only does she embrace glitter and sparkly headbands- she appears from a delicate fort. Not since my crush on Kate Bush, has a woman singer made me happy with envy.
When asked who inspired her style she is quoted as saying:

"Sun Ra, who was a crazy jazz musician. He told everyone that he came from Saturn and he used to wear cloaks, too. Also, I'm quite into this band called the Cockettes: they were bearded men who used to dress up in glamorous drag with glitter on their faces and they wore headdresses. I loved the way my mum used to dress in the late 70s and early 80s, though unfortunately she hasn't kept any of those clothes. My dad used to bring me gold jewellery and sequinned shalwar kameez back from Pakistan - I'm not into that tacky Bollywood thing, but I think that influence has helped me to be a bit more exploratory."

Looks like A.F. Vandevorst's new 2007 line may have had BAT FOR LASHES in mind while creating...

Mr. Picasso

When I was about 10, my mom signed me up for swimming lessons at the local pool. I really wasn't interested in learning how to swim. I always figured if I was drowning I could manage to doggy paddle to safety. I discovered pretty quick that the library was right across from the pool. I also learned that you could fit about 24 books nicely in a giant beach towel sling. I found Picasso there. I checked out all the picture books on him, including his blue period. I started moving on from there to Miro, Chagall, Odilon Redon etc...
Because of this strange relationship-( sneaking out of swimming lessons) I have always had a fascination with those old images of Picasso and his work, like he was an old friend. I have never gotten over my early findings there at the Solon library, and continue to do research. I was busted by the insane late fees that my overdue books eventually acquired .
If you are ever at a loss for finding a surprise gift for me- I collect vintage needlepoints of PICASSO, and other abstract artists. I like the funny ways people take art and make it crafty. Here are some I've missed out on in the past.

The Wholeo Dome of course.
The dome is an artistic expression of colored light. Completed in 1974, Wholeo Dome is a 14-foot-in-diameter, 7-foot-tall geodesic dome covered with curved, stained glass panels. “I created Wholeo Dome as an exercise in communicating using colored light as a medium, “ says Caroling the artist.

In 2004, after having been kept in storage for more than twenty years, Wholeo Dome is installed at The Farm School in Summertown, TN, USA.

Who Loves Ya Baby?

I have to admit I think Britney looks better than ever. Sure, she may be one step away from a lobotomy, but the shaved head is pretty hard core, or as David would say ..."epic". Finally you can get past all that fake weave extention hair drama and see her big eyes.

Growing up in Ohio, my little sister was a huge rebel/punk tomboy with this same look. She shaved it all off sometime in 87 to piss off our father, and in time for a Sinead O'Connor concert. I remember because it was right before Thanksgiving, and the rest of our family was freaked out. I always thought it made my sister so cool, she let it grow out an inch before dying it midnight blue to match her steel toe electric blue Dr. Martins.
Anyways, being bald is much better than having ridiculous fake hair fused to your head. If she decides to carve anything in her forehead and follow Charlie than we may have to reach out. I think it's funny that everyone is so repulsed by this move and not at all phased by all the strange celebrity plastic surgery faces. I mean what happened to Katie Courics eyes this month? How come nobody has mentioned that? I would rather be bald then look like a streched cat face with swollen lips.

Another Sunday Lou

After going three months steady without running a comb through my hair- my pal NINA took on the challenge. She not only made it feel like hair again- she cut off three inches of sad ends. I was actually afraid of the girl in the mirror- because glossy locks have never been my thing. I sort of adore the messy windblown (maybe there are hidden treasures in there) style. I of course had to document this for my pals- because it will never ever be this soft and luxurious anytime soon.
What's a girl to do when she has a new hair-do? Go out to dinner at Norm's with 97 year old Uncle Lou, of course.

When I asked what the cereal was called he said FIDDLE FADDLE.

Picture PING PONG

I'm currently in a group show up in Portland- if you live there please check it out... The show is curated by Brooklyn artist Elizabeth Huey.
here's the low down:

I am a group exhibition opening on February 1, 2007 at Quality Pictures in Portland, Oregon. I’m comprised of a small sampling of artists who post drawings, photos, and videos of who knows whats on other artists, friends and occasionally random peoples’ pages. The participating artists are not a collective. They are only a small sampling of a larger group of myspace creatives. Picture Ping Pong’s top friends include all 16 participating artists. Most of the artists have met only online and continue to interact almost exclusively via the internet. To picture ping pong is to visually converse and play through sharing images. ~~~ LET’s PLAY PICTURE PING PONG!!
Even more encouraging, the photos, drawings, and collages uploaded to the show’s MySpace are a ton of fun (with a few stinkers, as par for the course) and have gotten me really excited for the show. I’m really curious to see how the show comes off (a big difference between this show and lots of its similarly conceived, crappier local cousins is that PPP is full of diverse, talented artists, rather than the curator’s 15 best.

BLUME in LOVE

Last night I had the pleasure of watching a Paul Mazursky movie I had never seen before. As most of you film buffs know- he is the legend behind one of my favorite films I LOVE YOU ALICE B. TOKLAS. IF you have never seen that one-by all means rush out and watch it. Anyway the film we watched last night was made in 1973 and titled BLUME in LOVE. It sort of continues with the themes in his movie BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE --and the idea of how to survive marriage in the heyday of hippies & the "me first" era. BLUME IN LOVE offers up the director's vision of divorce, love, and life in Los Angeles in the 1970s. The movie has that perfect dated 70's quality-( that I always love-) while still managing to be funny. I decided to write about it- mostly because I've seen this "man cheats on woman" plot in a bunch of films made today that fail. I had a recent rant session about why some of these relationship movies even get made. I mean did anyone leave the theatre after "The Last Kiss" or "Trust the Man" and feel like having a relationship? I felt like someone punched me in the stomach and left me lost on day three of a horrible breakup. WOW and what about "We Don't Live Here Anymore" that one hurts bad. Not even Mark Ruffalo's exposed behind made that one feel good. These movies offer something I don't even want to feel in real life-let alone while escaping to a film. Mazursky however is sort of a pro at this subject. In BLUME IN LOVE, Stephen Blume (George Segal) has fallen deeply in love with his ex-wife, Nina (Susan Anspach), but she has moved on and become involved with Elmo (singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson), a groovy out-of-work musician. May I add here that I had never really understood the power of KRIS- until now. Whoa. The second Kris, circa 1973, enters the frame- I blushed. He has so much folky hippie sex appeal in this film with shirt unbuttoned to his navel. Ok, so of course Blume is jealous, begins obsessing about his ex and longs to have her back. He does everything from bring over breakfast bagels to pal around with Elmo and participate in sing-alongs.
The tagline on the poster is something like "A LOVE STORY FOR GUYS WHO CHEAT ON THEIR WIVES".
I'd like to think that this movie and Fatal Attraction put some fear out there.

My New ART Girl CRUSH

Growing up I always thought how cool it would be to have a twin. I read enough Sweet Valley High Books to have it down. So I was super excited to find online an art sister separated at birth. Hannah Kristina Metz is an amazing artist with a similar style of fashion illustrating. She overlaps darling creepy girls, pouty faces, giant bow fashions, and tiny text...much to my delight. According to her website- I think she may be on an extended stay in Vancouver. She also boasts watching Beavis and Butthead, eating cereal and winning monopoly. Happy V.D.

I got lucky. I have finally found a man who gets the gift giving thing. For the first time- someone who realizes that roses are ridiculous especially when forced. I had never been a big fan of Valentines Day- maybe the past had prepared me for the lackluster "romance" of the day. I like strange things, and prefer the "thought" over the money spent. So I knew I had a keeper- when a few years back- he presented me with a printed Black and White photo of us out laughing, made dinner, and handed me another large frame- this time -behind the glass -surrounded by a decorative matting- locked forever inside- his original torn/worn little black book. Underneath the little black book a small typed note (typewriter) it simply said:

Thank you for making this obsolete, Happy Valentine's Day Love.

K_gwowee

I mean, how can you top that?

Thought I would share this darling Valentine that I received from my pal Emily in NYC

Exotic Spectacle

Pola3

Sumurun_dvd_3

Last night I stayed in and watched Sumurun- a silent movie by Ernst Lubitsch that has been restored. The imagery is stunning and of course the scene stealer is Poland darling Pola Negri. I think it origianlly ran in the U.S. as "One Arabian night". Pola plays a traveling dancer who is drawn to both the harem and to the sheikh's handsome son. The movie predates the notion that a sexy figure must carry a massive bossom- as the ladies are often shown flat chested but exposing midriff. I fell in love with the dance scene- where Pola is slowly seducing the entire room with her sheer fabrics and dark shadowed eyes. This film was often referred to as one of the "funniest" silent movies, according to the new DVD release. I discovered these amazing images of her online as well as this perfect quote from the star:

"Love is disgusting when you no longer possess yourself."

In honor of Miss Cindy's birthday- we skirted off to the desert (Joshua Tree) to play in the sand and saddle up to a long bar. She was given magic spice cake which transformed the landscape into a wonderland of jack rabbits and speeding quail. We holed up at the famous Pioneertown Inn- where countless old school western films were shot, and the ghost of Gram Parsons roams. You can still ride your horses right up to the Inn and coral them while you devour racks of ribs at Pappy and Harriets saloon. When you drive in tons of wild bunnies and rabbits run around the parking lot.

The festivities involved all of the L.A. hippies and freaks driving up to the desert for a musical bonanza. Bands like Spindrift- the Moon Upstairs and our favorites- the Winter Flowers converged on the trail. Seemed everyone had found some form of mind altering distraction buried deep in a cactus flower. Random smiling strangers wandering in and out of motel rooms looking for a sing a long.

When we first took off on this adventure- we were all a litttle worried about Mr. P. We wondered- Could he possibly relax? Would he adapt to the laid back lifestyle? Would he drag along a suitcase of ties and cuff links? Could he accept a no work policy? Would his serious side be able to take a vacation?

we ran down Main street- and straight into a real Native Indian- at the rad trading post. His pal makes dream catchers and crazy crafts- which are piled 6 feet deep in his little storefront

way past the western town --furthur down the road- we discovered someone's yard that was a work of art. They had a pond of broken treasures and a sign that said- "Tis better to give to the circle than to take from it" It was at this moment I realized I had to move to Pioneertown and build yard art
