When neighborhood pal Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond told me she was shooting her video in Angelino Hts- I was so excited for her. Recently signed to Matador, Miss Stark has the voice of an angel and the chutzpah of a true punk rebel. I have known her now for almost 8 years. Our first strange encounter occured on the set of CAmeron Crowe's film "Almost Famous". We were both standing around in our groupie attire mumbling silently as extras behind KAte Hudson. I told her she looked like Dana Plato, and she took it kindly. Over the years we have played dress up at my shop, made elaborate ideas for our future plays, and discussed funny little things while at the corner cafe.
So, when she asked me if I would come down and actually be in the music video- AND do choreographed dance...as a friend I knew best to decline. She insisted that the dancing would be loose and carefree and not to worry about my rhythm challenge.
I showed up with Britz ( a former dance instructor in another life) and after a quick craft service- we were called over by the "choreographer" to learn "the moves".
Yes, counting two steps and then followed up with arm movements and a shimmy. A shimmy, I've learned is not my friend.
Britz had the thing down in minutes, maybe even seconds. While I struggled to figure out how to lead into the thing. All of those driveway dances from the 8th grade and failed talent show moments appeared in my mind. I was going to embarrass my mother again.
I opted for plan B...be in the video, but hide behind Britz and the rest of the dream dancers- try to stay out of the camera shot.
It just takes one glance at the FADER -behind the scenes- photos of the day long shoot- to find me in the crowd- LOOK FOR the only girl with arms stretched upward while all others are at the sides.
