HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY BRITTLEE

I have to mention that SATURDAY was the birthday of my favorite employee and pal BRITTSTER. For those of you deadbeats in the past that pretended to work for me- sorry for that wakeup call. She is probably the only Show Pony employee in the history to remain calm during all stylist emergencies, deal with the koo koo crazy old ladies, and always know when to mutter " Um, I'm sorry but she's not here right now" Which by the way is my favorite thing she does. Denying access to my bill collectors is always a plus.
She happens to be a whopping 23 now. That means we can no longer solely refer to her as "the kid".

She is off eating cheese on a stick in the midwest someplace at the moment- celebrating with her MOM who shares the same birthday. They also both adore Margaritas- so if you run into them- treat them to some.

HURRY BACK little one. I need a coffee companion.

JILL OF ALL TRADES!

My new and fabulous friend Emily KAtz and I drove up to Santa Barbara yesterday to sell our wares at the CRAFT-bonanaza "JIll of All TRADES". The event- hosted by Kenny and Chris of the PRESIDIO motel- was quite a hit. The crowd was very pro-female entrepeneur. All kinds of artists, bakers, performers, and designers filled the parking lot with VINTAGE and new crafts and clothes. We were positioned right in the middle of the place- and therefore had a great vantage point.
Having merely 4.5 hours of sleep and cupcakes for nourishment always adds to a fun day.

Miss Annakim Violette is off in Paris getting her serious relax on. In her spare time she has taken in crepes, sweet smelling flowers, the Eiffel Tower and so much more, leaving her friends envious.

Spring in your step

I know it may be silly to say- but the new Emilio PUCCI spring 2008 line makes me want to tap dance and pull out jazz hands.
MAtthew Williamson has brought back the best of the PUCCI print and added his pizzazz.
If I had any of this on my torso I would happily combust.
These purses make me want to scream "BAG YOUR FACE" !? What? you might ask? WEll seriously, if I had any of these fab bags I'd use it to hide behind.

i get by with a little help from my friends...

So I'm in the process of listing a bunch of EBAY listings in order to make some cash to help pay my health insurance deductable. I will be adding new stuff daily, but wanted to remind people who live far from me- that this is a cool way to contribute to the cause. I am going to be establishing a separate paypay account today as well.
Here's a few of the gems I've posted thus far. Remember- no one would volunteer to model so...

Revenge of RUFFLE monster and the magic print

I sometimes like the way things look on the runway, for the artistic merit...not to actually wear.

I am fond of ruffles and madness.

Thanks to all of you friends and fellow bloggers. For those of you here in L.A. the benefit is going to be OCT 18th (Thurs.) at the ECHO. It will help buffer the blow from the "other half" of my operation- that my health insurance isn't covering. My actual surgery is OCT 11th. Thankfully I have awesome creative friends who all offered to contribute time and talent. Becky STARK and LAVENDER DIAMOND are playing, along with The Winter Flowers, Blank BLue, Animal Magik, plus special surprise guests...maybe ENTRANCE. The Dublab guys are putting it all together. Hit -N- Run will be silkscreening my artwork onto t-shirts the whole night for guests. I think there will be an art auction that night scheduled too. I am getting a lot of my artwork back from various shows.

Don't worry if you are not here on the WEST COAST, we are also planning to start up some auctions on ebay of artwork, t-shirts, things and donated music memorobilia. I will be posting updates for those here, so if you want to help, you can bid on some of my crazy accessories and vintage. I may try to set up a paypal account specially for this event too.

After researching the recovery time of this particular operation- you will all be comforted in knowing that I will be trapped like the movie MISERY in my bed for 3-6 weeks and therefore writing posts hourly...ha ha. I heard that you don't feel completely recovered til week 10 or 12!! WHAT?
I may get a lot of reading and drawing in.

The new I.D. magazine has some pretty wonderful pictures.
I will try to paint from some of them.
But first did I mention that I made my very first Noodle Kugel last night for Yom Kippur.

and it's not even near Halloween yet.

First I saw a white ghost Ninja run down Echo Park Ave, then I witnessed a giant spider web on my friends back porch, and the strangest moment was while driving with my man to a birthday party...he morphed into a blood thirty vampire and tore into my flesh.

Chiffon + Whitesnake =

My mother grew up in Scotland, where her family still resides. I noticed that Fashion Designer Christopher Kane is from outside of Motherwell too. It's nice to imagine him growing up someplace quiet and quaint and then venturing off to Central St. Martins school and exchanging that for the fast paced fashion runway. He has been touted as the next big thing- "The new Galliano or McQueen" and for a 25 year old that must be overwhelming. In most interviews he appears shy and humble, talking sweetly of visiting his "mum" back home. So it's hard to imagine the evil villian who broke into his studio recently.
According to the designer, an intruder entered his studio and stole 23 collection pieces, primarily Cashmere and leather works, in addition to a company laptop. Although to most designers the loss would be devastating (especially so near to LONDON Fashion week) Kane confidently recreated the stolen looks.
He works alongside his sister Tammy- and their Spring 2008 show dragged me back to the late 80's in the best possible way. The tiered layers reminiscent of an acid washed denim layered tube dress that I wore out to the TUNNEL in NYC while a student at Parsons. It made me seem grown up and tough (not to mention a dead ringer for Samantha Fox)

Some outfits aren't for everybody. When that's the case, Bjork steps in and saves the day. She can take a sack, a cape and a cluster of pom poms and make magic. In the new issue of DAZED & CONFUSED magazine-the queen of Whimsy let's her freak flag fly. She also adorns the cover.

New Belly

The Lion's Cut didn't go down as planned. For those of you who have seen the insane amount of fluff and fur surrounding my cat Georgie Boy-you feel his pain. He has eaten more hair sandwiches then most cats. In my effort to cool him down, I had contemplated the full makeover "Lion's CUT" in which the body is completely bald while the paws -tail and face remain fluffy.
But getting him downstairs to the mobile groomers was tough enough. My heart was racing as she held him down for his first trim. He was calm and handled it like a champ. She rid his belly of tangles and 4 inch downy fur fur. It was sort of like sheep shearing. Later last night he lounged in front of the t.v. in his new bald belly glory.

The GRAND CANYON

I've never been to the Grand Canyon. But I've always liked thinking about the people driving all the way out to see it and taking a million photographs to document themselves in front of it, funny. As if without the photo proof the experience may have never existed.

Well, last night at the REDCAT (that awesome Gehry silver DISNEY structure)
Mr. Barry McGee delivered a powerful punch- just as remarkable as the Grand Canyon. How many times at an art show do you witness crowds and crowds of people with their cameras out snapping every inch of the work. Documenting themselves in front of it, behind it, under it? I realized just why people get so crazed when they are witnessing a wonder.
I ran into all sorts of artist friends, and yet it was hard to focus on their faces, because the humming buzz of McGee's vast colorful creations stole my attention. I was blinded by optical patterns of dizzying color, destroyed vehicles upside down, shattered glass, airplane like pieces protruding from swollen walls. It was a graffitti paradise. Patrons wandered through the wasteland of industrial dumpsters heavy with shopping carts and empty spray cans.
Amidst the buzz of people swarming the work, the band ABE VIGODA played. The youthful musicians killed it. Check them out on the cover of the new L.A. RECORD.

So if you want to be overwhelmed by a force of artwork, more powerful than the Niagra Falls and a glimpse of the Grand Canyon...venture down to the RED CAT exhibit.
You won't be disappointed. You may however feel lazy and depressed and wonder how long it took to make enough work to fill the grand canyon-and how that is physically possible.

"Performance becomes a world you can fall into… When I look out at the audience, I visualise a forest of dark emerald green trees beyond and a midnight sky above. I want to take the audience to a fantastical, but raw and animalistic place. Sometimes people in the audience cry and sometimes they howl… My sound is really dark and nocturnal, there is a huge connection to the spirit and the unknown. It's ethereal, textural, sensual, and when you take it live, it bursts out into 3D – all the power and rawness really comes through. Whenever you're doing something from the heart, you're on a spiritual journey… If you keep doing the same thing, you're not developing and not moving forward. I'm getting much more confident now, what you see onstage is a concentrated version of myself. Sometimes when I perform, I bang a big stick on stage - it's a bit Fleetwood Mac meets tribal. It's a shamanistic, Native American thing to do I guess…

It's almost as though I'm summoning the spirits. I really like the idea of theatricality and stage personas – of metamorphosing and transforming visually and musically into something else. I have quite a distinctive look, it's really a visual extension of who I am. I wear head-dresses and crazy make-up, and I like to wear a lot of gold, it's quite Egyptian… My music and style really work together, it's a two way relationship where they're always helping each other out. My lyrics are cinematic and really strong in symbolism, Halloween and forests and films by David Lynch are huge influences, the song 'Horse and I' actually came from a haunting dream of mine. My new video ('What's a girl to do') is based on what I call the 'hoody' films, like ET and Donnie Darko - wearing costumes and riding bikes at night through woodland against moonbeams and dark skies."

Lyrics from 'Horse and I' - "Got woken in the night, by a mystic golden light, my head soaked in river water, I had been dressed in a coat of armour, they called a horse out of the woodland, take her there through the desert shores…"

Caroline Martial

"Sometimes when I'm in a bad mood, I put on clothing that gives me power and I'm ready for war - because that's life, every day is a war. I wear my headband all the time, it's an ornament I love - it's a black, gold and pearl belt from a charity shop I changed to wear on my head. I wear no jewels - my headband is my ornament to give me power and protect me. Every day I wear a costume – my style is freaky. I make a dangerous mix of streetwear, cabaret and flea-market pieces. My music has no connection with my style, I'm really natural and wear the same clothing on and offstage. I put into Kap Bambino everything that's in my brain and sensibility…

I like glamour and 50s pin-ups because it's important to be a real woman. I don't have idols, but the amazing French punk band, 'Lu Crate Milk', from the early 80s is really inspiring to me. This band was so freaky punk - you can't describe their style, I hate it when you can describe a look because it's common. It's important for me to create a personal image with my music and the clothing I wear. Our music is different, intense and dance-floor, it's really violent and our performances are cathartic experiences. I connect with the audience over savage dance and everyone goes crazy, it's a release like therapy. Kap Bambino are a live band, we are all about performance - we are impulsive and spontaneous. I hate art school. I hate art gallery. I hate theatre. I hate comedians. I hate the normal code of stage and music – Kap Bambino is about creating something new. It's really dangerous to say this, but it's true. We want everyone to listen to us for the music, not for my face or my ass on stage."

"Performing is almost primal for me.. I run on adrenalin and go into a sort of trance, my show is so high energy it's like a work out. We wanted to create one of the most high-energy albums around – it's fast, aggressive, punky, electronic and industrial, it's almost exhausting. I wear outrageous outfits on stage like stretchy dance suits I've made myself on a sewing machine – and because I'm not the best sewer they fall apart by the end of each show. My stage style is inspired by modern Japanese Butoh theatre, the performers wear white on their face and are very physical and intense, I also love 70s androgyny - the outrageous bold colours and layering.

I was always really interested in fashion and would look at magazines growing up… but I was pretty removed from that world. I grew up in a remote part of Canada, in a cabin in the middle of a forest. We were raised in a totally non-commercial environment by hippy artist parents. I was really outdoors, built treehouses, spent a lot of time on my own. As a teenager I got into fashion and discovered heavy goth and punk music, Nina Hagen and Lene Lovich were really big influences on my sound and image… Nina Hagen is amazing because she's just so powerful. I've found I feel more powerful as a performer if I wear certain items – when I'm on stage that's very important, it's my number one concern that I command attention from the audience. When I perform I want to be 100 percent confident and completely aware of my body, I never do anything half-ass – I'm always full of energy, everything I do is done with conviction. I really shock the crowd, sometimes they're just staring buggle-eyed… they really don't know how to react."

Girl Possible

My friend Emma has done more pre-eighteen years than most people I know that are 30 years old. She has a great curious nature, and roams around looking for things to document in her world. She has attended summer art classes, formed photo blogs, shot for magazines, and has a vast network of creative friends to stir inspiration. I wish that someone would've told me at that age to form an electro-band, or submit work to magazines.
My parents were from the mindset..."Just work at a bank, or become a nice teacher."
"You gotta go to a four year school, not take that art scholarship to Savannah College of ARt and Design."

I used to play the harp in middle school. If I had any idea that you could rock out freak-folk style like Joanna Newsom, instead of joining the Orchestra my whole world could've been different.

I am always excited to see EMMA's new photographs, and can't imagine all the places and people that will someday be captured through her lens.
