telling stories with songs
"A My Barbarian catharsis is that of seeing the sun rise after a night at the disco theatrical, glamorous, and poignant." Flash Art, Jan-Feb 2006
Echo Park's magical performer Jade Gordon is part of the storytelling troupe MY BARBARIAN. For those of you new to my neighborhood, check out their site/shows and style. She also has a blog linked to the moldy doily called LAVENDER UTOPIA. Ms Gordon has a silent movie stare and wild mane of hair that can stir envy, especially when she is on stage!
My Barbarian is a collection of performers, musicians and songwriters based in Echo Park mostly. Malik Gaines (vocals, Rhodes, synths), Jade Gordon (vocals, dance), and Alex Segade (vocals, dance, glockenspiel, Micro-Korg) sing dramatic harmonies, propelled by the beats of Norwood Cheek (bass guitar, Mini Korg) and Andy Ouchi (drums). "They tell lyrical stories, airbrushing a style spectrum from Broadway disco to new wave prog, dancing out unicorn fantasy and urban memoir, in an opera-inflected improv performance style known as Showcore."
according to REDCAT-
"Incorporating epic storytelling with harmonious, hook-filled tunes, along with jazz-hands choreography, wild costumes and oversize props, a My Barbarian show will put a goofy smile on your face faster than a bong hit." Ann Magnuson, Paper Magazine, April 2006
The Los Angeles-based performance art band combines music, theater, dance and visual art in sublime sexy songs, surreal scene-stealing and phantasmagorical feats of pure fantasy fun. My Barbarian presents a radically inventive double bill of musical adventures: Silver Minds, a sci-fi, new-wave pop fable of time-travel, ghost stories, and eco-tourism, and the Los Angeles debut of You Were Born Poor & Poor You Will Die, a mini-epic rock opera set in an ancient world of masked dancers, High Priestesses and Bull God worship.
They play Halloween OCt 31st, 07 at the Silverlake Lounge
