Calling Little Edie

I should know better than to agree to go out on the town with the party legend Miss Cynthia. She has mastered the art of drinks and dancing and mingling, staying up too late and then planning to wake up super early to "estate sale" . When you stay up til 4:30 a.m. and plot to hit your first yard sale by 8:00 a.m., you're gonna need more than a coffee, maybe a hammer to the head.

We scored a few cheap goodies at the NICO/South Paradiso yard sale and a slice of pizza.

100_2644

We ended up heading around the corner to crazy estate sale that boasted the remains of a 97 year old Clairvoyant psychic. She was supposedly a world traveler who ran a church and kept a vast array of clutter.
There were some rad pieces of Egyptian jewelry and crazy 60's things, but they had them priced way up there. So we had to let them go.

We then drove over to an amazing 1897 Victorian house filled with 55 yrs. of collectable stuff. The owner was a former designer of Stephen Crane & Associates and attributed to the Tiki restaraunt movement in L.A.
There was a decadent crumbling artist quality to the estate, rich in history. Cynthia actually left one of the rooms moved to tears. There were mantles adorned with animals horns and giant shells. Coral clusters layered in bowls, tiffany lamps and chandelier crystals dangling from everything. One of the rooms was reserved for books galore. Serious art books out of print and cupboards of magical china. I could almost imagine the woman that traveled around the world and selected these pieces.

I also could sense why Cynthia was brought to tears from seeing the collections of owls, taxidermy, sea creatures, craft books and her future. I too was mesmerized by the 1920's sacred heart pendants, and gilded floral cluster pixie hair wreathes. There were rows of handmade bamboo birdcages and tons of records. I scored a nice Egon Schiele art book, 70's California Craft book, and an art nouveau book.
If you wanna go and see what is left in there, you may have to wait in a line like we did. They are willing to negotiate prices.

if you've been holding your breath...

Showponyreopen1

The time has finally arrived. The wonderful gypsy den has all grown up. The ladies are going to be more organized, more efficient, and more glamourous than ever. We not only have sparkling gloss walls, but new sexy displays and cases to house the gems. It's gonna feel like your are living your life like some French movie when you come in. Ok, maybe now I've gone too far, but hey anything is more fabulous that all that clutter we had in there before.
You won't believe your eyes. I promise. So mark it in your calendars, APRIL 5th, next Saturday. It's a luxurious affair with cupcakes provided by local darling DELILAHS. Plus special musical guest...HEATHER PORCARO of the Heartstring Symphony. All new designs for spring and summer and fancy new jewelry to hang all over your self.

It's gonna be well worth those 2-3 months we were M.I.A.
SPREAD the WORD

if at all possible, sleep less, make more

I spent most of my Easter Sunday working on art projects in my apartment. For those of you who don't already know...I am currently collaborating with VANS shoes on a line! It's a dream job working with cool women. The art/fashion collaboration will hit malls and shops nationwide in FALL 2009, and I am psyched. (is it obvious I've been hanging out with Scheid too many days in a row??)
Speaking of good pals, I'll be driving him to the airport at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow. Ouch

On Easter I met up for a coffee break with the ladies, Annakim in my favorite dress ever...
100_2526_2

and her fab bedazzled snake bracelets
100_2528

Miss K.K. also in her Easter dress best
100_2521

and of course the lovely Fran
100_2522

I took pics of myself wearing one of Miss Petrosa's DAISY necklaces- (note the circles under my eyes due to lack of sleep and long nights)

the 85 degree view from my firescape, sorry family in Ohio. It's been pleasantly warm here

Afterwards Cynthia, Fran, David and I headed to Monterey Park for spicy Szechwan fish.
I would regret this burning later.

Back to the drawing board

P.S. Did I mention that on Monday, the seeds I planted at the Equinox party started sprouting already?
That's right- my good fortune, creativity and LOVE are bursting

This past March 21st, The Luggage Store (ART gallery) featured the AMAZING duo Monica Canilao & Swoon. The show, titled Feral was documented PRE- art opening on FecalFace art Blog. Check out the amazing sneak peak pics of them setting up. They holed up in the space for a week, eating in there as well as building, sewing and painting directly on the walls. I've always adored both of these great women artists and admire their individual styles and materials, so naturally I am excited that they created a show together.

if it was still like it was, if we were still young

If you were still here, I would call you on the phone and wish you H A P P Y Birthday. You would tell me funny stories and make me laugh. We would wonder when we could meet up again, and hang out. And when we did you would lay out all of your fabulous new clothing finds and inform me of all the latest trends and music I need to buy.

Your adventurous spirit so much greater than most.
You had a way of making me do things I was afraid of trying.

I miss you pal. I will not forget your voice, the way you folded notes, the hundreds of letters and envelopes decorated with art and stickers addressed to me.
We shall meet again someday, and til then I live my life to the fullest because of you

Sometimes I wish I was still a kid just so that I could receive one of these in the mail, preferably from a grandparent. Unfortunately all of my grandparents have passed on. Remember when illustrators created cards like this with animals that were too cute for words?

Not to make my family back in the midwest bummed, but it's about 88 degrees here in Echo Park, and I had to slather on sunscreen. I may even wear a sun hat later with my dress. I will say, burying eggs in mounds of snow can't be too much fun.
Happy egg day

For those of you who are too lazy to read comments, I'm going to repost these images in case you were unable to see them hidden in my comments. They are compliments to Doily reader Jen B. who is simply listed on her blog as:

Genius.

She thought these mystery tour shots and forest nymphs were right up my alley. Indeed, I'm a sucker for haunted woods and floaty colored chiffons. I really like the balloons most of all.

Bittersweet Symphony

Last night we all went downtown to see our friend Sarah and her contribution to the Art Print Show at Poketo. The gallery is in a renovated warehouse space and is home to all types of collaborations with artists. Here was the flyer:

David seems to be turning into a sourpuss here. He was also approached the minute we arrived by a guy who recognized him the night before at the Little Joy. That's right folks, you heard it here first, David hit up the old LJ. Anyway, the guy complimented his t-shirt from the night before and then went on to say he is a huge fan of his blog too. WOW, david has a blog fanclub now. Got me thinking, maybe I should make MoldyDoily Fan Mail and glossy pics.
100_2482

we all decided to go to Little Tokyo and karaoke, maybe I should say "return to the scene of the karaoke crime". I am not going to name any names here, but look at that Ray Stevens song and you can guess
100_2483

Here's Fran actually sweet talking Whitesnake "here I go again..." in an almost folk implosion way. It took a few of us time to even guess what she was singing because her shy voice is almost strictly audible to dolphins

We signed David up for "Bittersweet Symphony", but he wasn't having it. He went outside and avoided the calling.
100_2495

These girls came up after all of us and killed it with their rendition of "AFrica" When you actually see the words to that song on the screen, you can't help but say...Huh? Good thing our friend's dad is actually in the band TOTO so I can ask the true meaning. According to Wikipedia:

"Africa" is a song by rock band Toto. Its story is told from the perspective of a man in Africa awaiting his female partner's inbound flight. The protagonist looks forward to their time together during the rainy season as it grants a reprieve from his normal responsibilities. The song's catchy chorus incorporates metaphor for his determination to guard his time with her: "It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you / There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do / I bless the rains down in Africa / Gonna take some time to do the things we never had".
