In 1998 while working at the vintage shop the WASTELAND as a buyer, I formed a friendship with Vincent Gallo. I soon learned that Mr. Gallo was not only a director/writer/model/musician/actor but a super fan of collectable fashion and occasionally a designer. He would regularly collect clothes from designers like Granny Takes a TRIP, North Beach Leather, and East West Music Co.

I am seriously bummed to the max about forgetting to bid on this fab silk flapper dress on ebay. It ended up selling for a mere $17 bucks. How did I forget to check ebay you may ask? Blame Georgie and his distracting cuteness.
remember my post a few month back on that incredible estate sale in Pasadena? Well the same crew recently sold off the estate of darling hairdresser Lily Dirigo, who worked on all the famous silent movie heads.

Some of the stuff in her estate sold yesterday for next to nothing- WHY WHY WHY did I forget to bid on these lovely things: they are old carved brooches and the pair sold for $9.99 You know how I love cluster pins!
she also had tons of cool pictures of the celebs she worked on back then, often with personal autographs on the back. I wanted to win Viv the Vint. 1932 Marlene Dietrich 'Shanghai Express' Photo. But it sold for a whopping $332!
This is a great set of two antique movie promo photos. They feature June Collyer and Mary Astor and they are standing in front of a two way mirror, miming each others actions. They were photographed by Max Mun Autrey. Their hair was done by Lily Dirigo, Carmen's mother.

This is a wonderful find, an antique movie still photo of Ms. Jetta Goudal. She was a silent film star in the 1920s and one of Cecil B. DeMille's stars. She is featured in this promo still, and the original owner has written her name on the back of the photo in pencil.
here's the info listed on their website for her:
Carmen was a Hollywood hair stylist who worked on many of the top stars during the
Golden Age of Hollywood, including Gary Cooper, Fredric March, Orson Welles, Gracie
Allen, Frances Dee, Ronald Colman, W.C. Fields, Mae West, Gary Grant, Merle Oberon(Wuthering
Heights), Joan Fontaine, Paulette Goddard, and Joan Bennett (Carmen's maid of
honor in 1940)etc.
She began as a dancer and showgirl in the Hollywood Box Revue in the 1920s. Carmen
performed in numerous theatrical productions including "No, No Nanette"
for Carter DeHaven and Oliver Morosco, theatrical producer, in "The Morning
After". She also performed at the Pantages and Egyptian Theatres in Hollywood.
Carmen became a hair dresser in the 1930s doing men's wigs and went from there
doing hundreds of films, two including two Oscar winning movies, Stagecoach and
Wuthering Heights. She ended up her career in television in the early 1960's.
Her mother, Lily, worked at the Carl Laemmle Studios (Universal) in the early 20's.
After convincing Carl Laemmle Sr. of the need for touch up and hair 'adjusting'
and styling, Lily became the first 'on studio lot', full-time hairdresser
in the motion picture business. She worked on Greta Garbo, Loretta Young, Priscilla
Dean, Una Merkel and many others in the silents and on into the talkies until 1957
with 'Around the World in 80 Days'.
Carmen started painting the 1980s and passed away at the age of 99 last year, 2007.
Watch for our other auctions featuring more paintings, movie stills, Carmen and
Lily at work photos, jewelry, Hollywood history, postcards, sheet music, Equestrian
paper, and other historical ephemera.

I also couldn't afford this stuff on ebay either...
from other random sellers- alas the auctions are kaput
hey, you win some you lose some, right?
and as we all know the last thing I need is more stuff. But of course sharing it with you folks makes it seem more comforting

Once again, I am posting on my favorite ebay model. I couldn't help it, I had to post a pile of pictures of her and her tough poses. I wonder where this seller is digging up these super rad Avant Garde hooded coats from the 80's. Doesn't everyone need at least one spy coat, a sexy snoopy t-shirt dress, a drapey massive plaid poncho, and an acid wash jumper? I'm not creepy, I just grew up drawing fashion poses from magazines and when I see someone who can contort like the best of them ie: kate moss, I get inspired.
Besides some of these strange jackets look like something from the back of a M. Margiella or V. Westwood closet.

I have lost my touch, or maybe it's God's great intervention to prevent me from purchasing insane 80's Bananarama gear. Either way, I was outbid for a reason so I shall share and lament my sweet losses.
You know you love that original ESPRIT de CORP baggy suspender stuff

remember to think of me if you see any hideous and happy neon or tribal print 80's jumpers

My new favorite Ebay model remains nameless. Of course in the world of online auctions, these girls rarely get credited. I like to fancy that she is sort of a "Gia" or "Charlotte" perhaps something tough like "Angie".
She reminds me of that cool early 80's movie TIMESQUARE, and girls that cut gym class and smoked instead. Anyway, I don't know if it's good or bad, but her attitude cancels out my ability to check out the clothes. I'm in the mood for that doily shredded looking cream top...

but may want to bid on. I have always wondered how so many EBAY shops get it together to post a million items a week and somehow score models and fancy fonts and get their items bidded up beyond $100 bucks!
Maybe I need advice or a course in retail sales?
Most of the following fashions are ending soon and are getting up past $200- WHOA, eh? Too bad for me, a few of the dresses are "my thing"

So I listed some new auctions on the ol' ebay account for people to bid on.
http://stores.ebay.com/ShowPonyVintage
All of the proceeds from these sales to go towards my surgery costs. Speaking of that bummer tumor, I went today to visit my Dr. Violet, where I had to give up some of my blood. Which is probably my worst fear- VEINS. I don't know exactly when I started fearing anything to do with wrists and veins- but alas- I do.
So Mr. P and David accompanied me first to the Farmer's MArket where we ate hamburgers and a bought a giant kitty glazed donut.
To help with that blood sugar thing.
It all went splendid, I just didn't look at all.
Check out the JUST finished Benefit flyer!!

When I was a young girl attending Catholic School in Ohio, uniform dressing was a must. You were not even permitted to wear colorful socks (I was once scolded for my white FONZEE Ayyyy!! knee highs) and had to wear the specific saddle shoe from Buster Brown. Considering these restricted options- I had little room for creativity, when it came time for dressing. I did learn, however that the nuns did not mind fanciful hair styles. So I grew mine to my waist and begged my mother to change my hair style every day. She became a master at the french braid, fish tail, Side pony, Princess Leah...etc... Her moment of glory was the braided Bo Derek 10 look complete with babyd blue beads. The first hairstyle to set the whole school yard in a frenzy. I still have an obsession with accessories for the hair. I love all kinds of crazy clips from the 80's, beaded flapper headbands and folk leather bun holders. I discovered recently on EBAY a seller who has collected and gathered a vast assortment of hair clips from Victorian era to bad 80's. If you were in need of a little hair flair- go and get 'em

If you are a dainty size 7 and want to glitter up your toes...may I suggest bidding on my magic fairie shoes on EBAY this week. I'm offering up for auction these gems- that are a tiny bit too small for my Cinderella feet. I contemplated slicing off my piggy toes- but decided to say adieu to the maryjanes instead.
Like new- and hard to look away from...

For some weird reason, I have a strange attraction to hideously gaudy jewels. Maybe it has something to do with that scene in Goonies when they discover the magical Pirate booty- with all those crazy colored necklaces and stones. Ok maybe not. Perhaps it's the Italian side of me- that wants to look "Casino" and have any reason to wear a tiara and cascading waterfalls of rhinestones all at once. I have recently bid on a few gems-only to be sniped out of the win. Too bad, cause this Czech red stone one is perfect for a dance routine on Valentines Day. I don't even really want to wear them out of the house- just maybe see them spilling from boxes on my vanity.
Speaking of pirate booty...Check out the rad boots that Cynthia scored on Ebay this week.

Every now and then I discover E-bay sellers who not only have cool gypsy/folk/hippie appeal- but also utilize the power of real back-drops, photographers, and models. Thus creating auctions that have more flash and pow then anything I could dream up. I'm not sure if it's the smoke and mirrors or the magical clothes that lure me in. The people at NASTY GAL vintage are still going slightly au natural.
most of these are still up for sale --a few are on there way out- and going for big money.
